GENERAL TRAVEL PLANNING

We recommend booking your trip (flight, bike transport, rental car, hotels) as soon as you possibly can after registering. 

We also recommend, at the very least, you arrive on The Big Island (Kona) at least a full 48 hours before the event. If you can get there even earlier, you should. 48-hours does technically allow for enough time to pickup your rental car, make your way to the hotel, pickup your packet (Thursday or Friday), do the practice swim (Friday Morning), attend the mandatory meeting (Friday Afternoon), relax, and be in bed to get plenty of rest before the event starts on Saturday morning. The event concludes on Saturday for some, and Sunday for others. Sunday evening we will have a dinner at 6:00pm during which we will present the finisher's shirts, overall awards, and take the group photo. Please plan on sticking around to join us Sunday night for the festivities.

Return flights, assuming you want to be at the dinner, should be scheduled for late in the evening Sunday or Monday is best if you can. That means that most trips will need to be a total of at least 4-5days / 3-4-nights. FLIGHTS AND RENTAL CARS

We recommend you book your roundtrip flight(s) and rental car from Kona International Airport, Hawaii. There are plenty of rental car companies at the Kona International Airport as well. If you are planning on site seeing to the summit of Mauna Kea keep in mind your rental car company has to allow that with their vehicles. Most rental car companies do not allow their vehicles (even with 4WD) to go to the top and remain covered by insurance. Double check to find one that allows it if you want to visit the top of Mauna Kea.
